Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about The Patina Register, our editorial scope and how to get in touch.
What is The Patina Register?
The Patina Register is an independent English-language editorial journal for collectors of twentieth-century mechanical wristwatches. We publish long-form articles on auctions, authentication, care and restoration, collector profiles, buying handbooks and thematic dossiers.
Is the site free to read?
Yes. Every article on the site is freely accessible. We do not operate a paywall, subscription or reader account system.
Do you authenticate or value my watch?
No. We do not authenticate, appraise or value individual pieces. Our editorial covers categories and references for general education and does not replace professional inspection by a qualified watchmaker or specialist dealer.
Can I submit a story or correction?
We welcome corrections and story ideas. Please write to the editorial address listed on our Contact page. Corrections are verified against independent sources before publication; we correct factual errors promptly and openly.
Do you sell watches or act as a broker?
No. The Patina Register is purely editorial. We do not sell watches, broker transactions, or accept payment for favourable coverage of any brand, dealer or auction house.
Why do you focus on 1948–1985?
This window captures the golden age of serial mechanical production before the Quartz Crisis reshaped the industry, and the subsequent revival of mechanical watchmaking in the early 1980s. It is the period most relevant to collectors seeking historically significant, hand-wound and automatic timepieces.
How do you choose which references to cover?
Our editors select references based on historical significance, collector interest, availability of verifiable archive material, and the educational value of the story. We aim to cover both well-known benchmarks and under-appreciated references that deserve wider attention.
Do you accept advertising?
The site may display advertisements served by third-party networks. Advertising has no influence on editorial content or coverage decisions. Readers may opt out of personalised advertising through the controls described in our Privacy Policy.
Can I use your images or text on my own site or publication?
Short excerpts for non-commercial personal use are permitted with clear attribution and a link to the original article. Wider reproduction, republication or commercial use requires prior written permission from the editors. See our Terms of Service for full details.
How often is the site updated?
New articles are published on a regular editorial schedule. The home page always shows the latest additions. There is no fixed publication day; quality and accuracy take precedence over speed.
Who writes the articles?
All articles are written by our editorial team, each of whom has between six and thirty years of experience studying, collecting and servicing vintage watches. Where a piece discussed in an article belongs to a member of the team, that connection is disclosed within the article.
I have a question not answered here. How do I reach you?
Please visit our Contact page for the appropriate editorial address. We read every message, though response times may vary depending on volume.
